CLOUD LAND BY YOSHIMASA TATSUMI
Yoshimasa Tatsumi pictured a landscape blurred by thick fog when creating Cloud Land - the Anzas Entertainment dance studio in Beijing.
Step into the Anzas Entertainment dance studio in Beijing, and immerse your body in a sea of white particles. As the floor gradually melts away, your depth perception is obliterated as well. Dancers manage to maintain a sense of balance only by concentrating on the flat surface beneath their feet. The creator of this mysterious space, architect Yoshimasa Tatsumi, pictured a landscape blurred by thick fog, an image that he chose as his point of departure. He calls the space Cloud Land and describes it as a place in which ‘everything except the ground is caught in a whiteout’. Tatsumi used white ceramic paint to make the dotted gradations that appear on three of the four mirrored walls of the studio. Together, these vertical surfaces produce a seemingly endless space. Nothing else was used to craft the delicate yet overwhelming visual effect.
